Amazon’s set-top box, dubbed Fire TV, has voice search initiated via a button on the remote. Which is awesome if your kid/dog/husband doesn’t steal the remote all of the time.
Here are the terms you can use to search (and sample queries). Just press and hold the microphone button on the remote:
TV shows "Alpha House"
Movies "Young Adult"
Actors "Gary Busey"
Directors "Kathryn Bigelow"
Genres "Romantic comedies"
I’m most excited about genres search, since we’re big fans of nature shows at home, but Netflix seems to think we want any kind of documentary. Fire TV is not exactly magical, but looks better than I’ve experienced with Roku’s manual search terms entry and limited, non-visual display.
What’s not known at this time is how extensive the voice search system is. Will it just work for the platform you’re watching on (eg a search for “House of Cards” only works on the Netflix app), or will it search across the entire catalogue of each application?
